Walking Dead EP Greg Nicotero and Chandler Riggs talk shock Carl twist
The Walking Dead executive producer Greg Nicotero and Carl actor Chandler Riggs have discussed the latest Walking Dead plot twist, which saw Carl lose an eye after being shot in the face.
The pair were speaking on separate panels at Walking Dead fan convention Walker Stalker in London on Saturday, where were both guests.
Greg Nicotero, who also serves as special effects makeup supervisor and directs some episodes (including the stunt-heavy action-packed midseason opener), talked to fans about the impact of Carl’s horrific injury throughout the rest of the season:
“This wound has a very specific function in terms of who Carl is. This wound changes him and makes him a different person. In the comic book, and only in the comic book, there’s this specific moment where Carl reveals his wound to somebody, and it goes to show his character, who he’s become.”
Discussing the actual injury suffered by the son of series protagonist Rick Grimes, Nicotero said: “What we played was when Carl was hit, it hits this bone right here, and the bone shattered into his eye. The bullet went that way [gestures away from face]. Even though the bullet isn’t physically in his eye, the bone fragments are what’s in his eye and caused all that damage.”
At a later panel, Chandler Riggs teased fans by admitting that the biggest secret he’s ever had to keep is a season six development that is still “coming up”.
When pressed whether the secret was bigger than the dramatic turn of events that saw Jessie and her two children killed and Carl’s eye injured, Riggs confirmed that it was, teasing: “It’s huge.”
The Walking Dead premieres Monday 9pm FOX.
