Tom Powell opens up on ex-girlfriend Sophie Gradon’s death: “I never expected this, ever”
Tom Powell has spoken out after receiving the tragic news of Sophie Gradon’s death this morning.
Tom and Sophie fell for one another when they met on ITV2’s Love Island in 2016, and remained close friends even after their split in the following months.
Speaking to Metro, Tom described his shock upon hearing the news of Sophie’s passing.
“I [was woken] up at 7am this morning, one of her friends told me,” he said. “I didn’t understand it; didn’t know if it was a joke.
“I’m so shocked I didn’t have much to say. I spoke to her two weeks ago and she was fine, we were laughing and joking on Facetime, she told me she was dating someone new. She seemed happy.”
Recalling their past relationship, Tom said: “We had a bad breakup, two years ago, but six months later we spoke and apologised to each other for both being d*ckheads.
“She’d stick up for me and have my back and the exact same as hers.”
He added: “I know she had issues and she was on medication for the past few years for anxiety and depression. I never expected this, ever.”
Tom has confessed he wishes he could have told his friend that her feelings would pass.
“[I wish I could say] It will get better,” he said. “She was down a lot and whenever she was down, she would get quite low, but she would make it positive, so I don’t understand.
“I wish there was more people there for her… because of what she must have felt by herself.”
Sophie’s body was found at her home in Medburn on Wednesday, June 20. Police have confirmed there are no “suspicious circumstances surrounding her death”.
A Northumbria Police spokesperson told The Mail Online: “At about 8.27pm yesterday, police attended a property in Medburn, Ponteland, where sadly a 32-year-old woman was found deceased. There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding her death. A report will now be prepared for the coroner.”
