Toby Jones’ character in Sherlock season 4 revealed
At last, the identity of Toby Jones‘s character in Sherlock season 4 has been revealed. Described by the show’s co-creator Stephen Moffat last month as “one of Doyle’s finest villains”, it turns out the Detectorists star will be taking on the role of Culverton Smith, the tropical diseases ‘expert’ from The Adventure of the Dying Detective.
So what might his highly anticipated storyline entail? Here’s what we know from the book…
Sherlock Holmes first inspired Culverton Smith to hold a grudge against him when he suspected him of his nephew’s murder. Smith retaliated against the detective by infecting a spring-loaded pin with a deadly disease and posting it to 221b Baker Street, in the hope of killing Holmes. Suspecting the threat against his life, Holmes cleverly decided to feign infection with the disease – even convincing a distraught Dr Watson that he was dying – in order to trap Smith and have him arrested for the previous murder.
Smith has previously been brought to life on screen by Jonathan Hyde, who played the character in the 1994 series The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, which starred Jeremy Brett in the titular role (video below).
Toby Jones’s Culverton Smith will make his debut in the second episode of Sherlock season 4, which we expect in January 2017. He will be reuniting with Benedict Cumberbatch, whom he co-starred with in Amazing Grace (2006), and Martin Freeman, whom he starred alongside in Nightwatching (2007).
