Every Friends Thanksgiving episode ranked from worst to best
It’s that crucial calendar event of the American year that us hungry Brits really want to get on board with, and how better to celebrate than with the sitcom that is probably the reason most of us know about November Turkey Day?
We salivated over the Thanksgiving dinners shared by Ross, Rachel, Chandler, Monica, Joey and Phoebe back in the ’90s. Here are all ten Friends Thanksgiving episodes ranked from worst to best.
10. The One with the List (Season 2)
Ranked low because instead of festive cheer and food, we were teased with Rachel and Ross (back when we loved them) finally getting it on only for their union to be harshly taken away from us at the last possible minute.
9. The One with the Late Thanksgiving (Season 10)
Let’s face it, every episode of season ten ranks low on the list of favourite episodes. It at least captured the traditional holiday spirit, in that Ross, Joey, Rachel and Phoebe completely took for granted the efforts of Chandler and (mostly) Monica in making a Thanksgiving feast.
8. The One with Chandler in a Box (Season 4)
This might have been higher had it not been for my hatred of Kathy, the woman who gets between Joey and Chandler’s beautiful friendship in this Thanksgiving episode. The whole spectacle, in which Chandler apologises for kissing Joey’s girlfriend by spending Thanksgiving in a box, is just a complete waste because Kathy cheats on Chandler a couple of episodes later.
7. The One Where Chandler Doesn’t Like Dogs (Season 7)
Despite previously having no aversion to man’s best friend, Chandler unveils the super unpopular opinion that he doesn’t like dogs in this Thanksgiving episode. We’ve rated this higher than we probably should have due to the presence of the super adorable Clunkers the dog.
6. The One with Rachel’s Other Sister (Season 9)
Christina Applegate appeared as Rachel’s other sister Amy in this solid Thanksgiving offering, during which Amy wreaks havoc on the group’s quality friendship time by posing bleak hypothetical questions. Meanwhile, baby Emma is asleep the entire episode, like a good sitcom baby.
5. The One Where Underdog Gets Away (Season 1)
The first ever Friends Thanksgiving episode found the group locked outside of Monica and Rachel’s apartment after visiting the roof to spot the escaped Underdog balloon. It started the tradition of truly memorable Friends Thanksgiving episodes.
4. The One with the Football (Season 3)
This could only be better if it were soccer, or rugger, but since they’re American (and they did do a rugby tribute later on in the series) we’ll let it slide. The group play three a side American football while waiting for the turkey to cook. After the game turns nastily competitive, both teams resort to some hilariously dirty tactics.
3. The One with the Rumor (Season 8)
Otherwise known as “The One with Brad Pitt”, this episode ranks highly as probably one of the best guest star appearances ever in the series. Brad played a formerly obese schoolfriend of Monica and Ross, and revealed that he and Ross started a rumour that Rachel was a hermaphrodite at school.
2. The One Where Ross Got High (Season 6)
This absolutely hilarious Thanksgiving episode included Jack and Judy Geller, who are always a massive Friends bonus, and a plot about them disliking Monica’s now-boyfriend Chandler. After Ross reveals the real reason Jack and Judy dislike Chandler, a round of laugh-out-loud quick fire confessions take place.
1. The One with All the Thanksgivings (Season 5)
Could there be any other? In season five, the gang decided to recount the stories of their worst ever Thanksgivings, complete with flashbacks and hilarious ’80s outfits. The reason Chandler is missing half a toe is revealed to be Monica’s fault, and she attempts to comfort him by placing a huge turkey on her head and dancing. It prompts the famous “I love you” scene, which still holds a special place in our hearts.
