Robert Downey Jr. and True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto join forces for new HBO drama
Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. will join forces with True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto for a new HBO drama, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Although the title and the synopsis of the project are a tightly-kept secret at HBO, it is apparently clear Pizzolatto will write the new script while Downey Jr. has agreed to make a return to the small screen.
Sources suggest the project may be a reboot of 1960s legal drama series Perry Mason. Downey Jr. has been working on a Hollywood reboot of the series for several years, with it now looking like the series will return to television rather than making a silver screen splash.
Perry Mason is about a criminal defence lawyer in LA, who typically represents murder suspects. It was one of the most popular shows on television during the late 50s and 60s, scoring nine Emmy Awards and regularly airing in syndication ever since.
Downey Jr. has not appeared on television since 2000, when he had a short stint as Larry Paul on FOX’s legal comedy-drama Ally McBeal. His portrayal earned him a Golden Globe Award, but he was later sacked for two drugs arrests in quick succession.
Meanwhile, Pizzolatto has a deal with HBO that keeps him at the network until 2018, regardless of whether any more series of True Detective are released in that time.
While the first season was deemed a critical success, fans and critics were less enamoured with the crime anthology’s second season last year, with many describing it as “confusing”.
However, HBO president Casey Bloys confirmed last month that the network does plan to make a third season, saying: “It is not dead. I talked to Nic about it and both Nic and HBO are open to another season. I don’t think Nic has a take and he’s working on some other projects. We’re open to somebody else writing it and Nic supervising it. It’s a valuable franchise, it’s not dead, we just don’t have a take for a third season yet.”
Stay tuned for information as we have it on the mysterious new project.
