Richard Ayoade to replace Mel and Sue on C4’s Great British Bake Off?
It has been rumoured that Richard Ayoade is now favourite to host the Great British Bake Off when it moves from BBC One to Channel 4 next year.
Following the news that current presenters Mel Gierdroyc and Sue Perkins will not be following the show when it moves to a rival broadcaster next year, Channel 4 are now on the hunt for a new host to front the baking programme. And it looks as though the hilarious IT Crowd actor is the new frontrunner to take on the role.
With incredibly big shoes to fill in the absence of Mel and Sue, could this actor, presenter and comedian tick all the right boxes? Allegedly, producers of Bake Off believe his dry sense of humour, combined with his quirky, loveable character, could make him a worthy candidate to replace the much-loved duo.
A source told The Sun newspaper: “Richard is a really popular choice at the minute, as many think he’s got a great character that would bring a great spark to the show.”
“He’s got a wonderful off-beat sense of humour, which would really fit the change of channel – and would no doubt be a popular choice with viewers too.”
The insider added: “It’s still early days, but he is definitely up there and now the leading candidate.”
Best known for his role as Moss on the IT Crowd, Ayoade has also made regular appearances on The Big Fat Quiz of the Year, presented three series of Channel 4’s Gadget Man and worked alongside Noel Fielding in the iconic The Mighty Boosh. Watch the 39-year-old in action here:
As well as a new host, fans of the show are itching to hear who will also be replacing judge Mary Berry, who has announced that she will not be following the programme over to Channel 4. However, Paul Hollywood will remain on the Great British Bake Off after the move.
