Does this new Walking Dead promo image reveal the arrival of another set of villains?
A new Walking Dead season seven promotional image has sparked speculation that comic villains The Whisperers could be appearing in the newest series of the show.
The new image shows the head of a decapitated person on a spike, possibly to present a warning to Rick’s survivors.
Beware, comic book and possible show spoilers below.
In the comics, The Whisperers are a dangerous cult of survivors whose members shield themselves from walkers by wearing their skin, a technique tried to much success but general disgust by Rick and the group last season. The Whisperers do not tend to attack walkers, but prefer to go on murderous rampages towards the living. In one such rampage in the comics, Alexandrians are the subject of their murderous tendencies and the Whisperers place the heads of those they have killed on spikes. It’s not completely unlike the above picture.
If true, this would be quite a big and unexpected jump from the comics. The television show has only just introduced Negan, one of the show’s most-eagerly anticipated baddies from the comics. In fact, until the series premiere Negan hasn’t even technically killed anyone yet, so it would feel a bit premature to bring in even more sadistic maniacs before we’ve fully exploited our current one.
The Walking Dead already has quite a lot of comic content to get through this season, with the promised fleshing out of Negan, the Saviours and the Hilltop community. Not to mention we’ll apparently also meet The Kingdom community this season.
The image is pretty cool, but we’re going to go out on a whim and say it probably doesn’t tease the entrance of The Whisperers for the above reasons. But what do we know…?
