Lent special: What would our favourite TV characters [fail to] give up?
Pancake day is over, which means it’s time for some of us to honour the sacrifices of Jesus Christ by giving up something dear to us for the next six weeks. For most of us, that means chocolate. Maybe booze.
In celebration of Lent, we had a think about what our favourite television characters might give up for Lent, and this is what happened next.
1. Sheldon Cooper (The Big Bang Theory): his spot
Sheldon is definitely an atheist but if he wasn’t we think the hardest thing he could part with could be his spot. Or his work in physics. Or the routine agreed upon in the roommate agreement. Or trains. Or his friends – no, sorry, that’s a stretch.
2. Barney Stinson (How I Met Your Mother): suits
Barney made his feelings on giving up suits very clear in the 200th episode of How I Met Your Mother:
3. Joey Tribbiani (Friends): sandwiches
We’re not sure anything – women, acting, friends – comes close to the glory of a meatball sub for Joey Tribbiani. Let’s not forget the time Joey tried to save his sandwich from a bullet.
4. Ramsay Bolton (Game of Thrones): torturing people
Ramsay’s probably not going to be taking up the Christian faith any time soon, but we honestly believe giving up his favourite hobby would improve the world in general.
Note: The actual video of this scene didn’t fit the tone of the piece, so have this one instead:
5. The Doctor (Doctor Who): “sonic” items
We would say the sonic screwdriver, but Peter Capaldi’s Doctor has retired the ultimate plot hole-fixing device. Twelve now sports sonic sunglasses, which basically perform the same purpose of solving every problem he faces.
6. The Dowager Countess (Downton Abbey): sassy put-downs
Unlike our suggestion for Ramsay, we never want the Dowager to actually give these up, because what is Downton without the Dowager’s hilarious quips?
7. Phil Dunphy (Modern Family): technology
Whether it’s queueing up for a new iPad, teaching his befuddled family to use the home cinema system or convincing his father in law to try his new high-tech barbecue, Phil is always itching to try the newest cool gadget.
8. Samantha Jones (Sex and the City): sex
An obvious one, Samantha could give the men of New York a much-deserved rest for a month by giving up sex for Lent. Pretty unlikely, however.
9. Frank Underwood (House of Cards): lying
A small ask for anyone in politics, we know. Doing so would almost certainly see Underwood’s tenure at the top crumble (at an even faster rate than season three) very quickly. We doubt we’d see season five.
10. Rachel Berry (Glee): singing
Rachel has given up singing once as a punishment to the rest of the Glee club, who she didn’t think would be able to survive without her. They survived.
11. Oliver Queen (Arrow): flashbacks
We know it’s probably a little mean to suggest sacrificing something he has no control over (maybe justice would be fairer), but it’s season four of Arrow and it’s getting really old. How much could have happened on the island anyway? It’s a rhetorical question, LOST fans.
12. Jessica Jones (Jessica Jones): whiskey
As the video below perfectly illustrates, Jessica would struggle to continue her life without a constant state of drunkenness. We think if she were to give up booze, the withdrawal period would probably last the entirety of Lent.
