Joel Edgerton joins Jennifer Lawrence in espionage thriller ‘Red Sparrow’
Australian actor Joel Edgerton is set to co-lead upcoming espionage thriller Red Sparrow alongside Jennifer Lawrence.
The Black Mass star, who has rocketed to Hollywood attention with his impressive performances in The Gift, Zero Dark Thirty and Midnight Special, is said to be taking on the lead male role of a young CIA agent who handles the agency’s most sensitive penetration of contemporary Russian intelligence.
Meanwhile, Lawrence will play Russian intelligence officer Dominika Egorova, who has been drafted against her will to become a “Sparrow”; a trained seductress in the service.
We can expect to see a whole lot of sly deception and sexual tension between Lawrence and Edgerton as their characters collide over a charged political atmosphere.
Francis Lawrence (who helmed the Hunger Games series, and no, he’s not a relation of Jen’s) will direct. The screenplay was first drafted by Eric Warren (American Hustle), and has since been re-written by Justin Haythe (Revolutionary Road).
Joel Edgerton can next be seen in the already Oscar-tipped Loving, which is due in cinemas this November.
