Is Charmed coming back? Counting down our top 10 TV girl squads
In light of the upcoming Gilmore Girls reboot, rumours have been circulating that hit fantasy series Charmed may soon return to our screens with its original cast intact. Running for eight seasons from 1998 – 2006, the beloved show starred Shannen Doherty (later replaced by Rose McGowan), Holly Marie Combs, and Alyssa Milano as the three Halliwell sisters, who all had enviable witchcraft skills.
Asides from all its cool fantastical and action elements, the three ladies’ different yet equal charms made for our favourite thing about the show; the strong female friendship core that Alyssa Milano describes as “perfect post-feminist girl-power”. To celebrate the potential reboot of Charmed, we’re counting down the top ten other girl squads to have graced our TV screens.
10. Parks and Recreation
A group of awesome smart women who relentlessly supported and stuck up for one another in times of struggle, encouraged each other’s dreams, and constantly showered their sisters with praise for both their outstanding achievements and just their everyday awesomeness, it’s no wonder the female power team of Leslie, Ann, April and Donna spawned our favourite holiday of Galentines Day.
9. Pretty Little Liars
Aria, Spencer, Hanna, and Emily have been through pretty much everything together; a best friend’s supposed murder, harassment from beyond the dead, and an ever increasing bodycount amongst the people they know. When the whole world seems against them, they’re there for each other more than ever.
8. New Girl
Best friends since school, Jess and Cece know each other inside out, allowing them to give the best advice and emotional support to one another. The two best friends have opposing-yet-complimenting personalities, making for the perfect duo. And even though Jess is surrounded by three awesome male roommates, ultimately there’s no substitute for a female friendship.
7. Buffy the Vampire Slayer
The friendship between Buffy and Willow weathered everything from the petty jealousies of high school, to the love triangle with Xander, the confusion of sexual identity, and of course, a whole lot of demons. While neither was the perfect friend at all times, the two besties shared an amazing emotional openness, and ultimately relied on each other to navigate through life’s challenges and truly grow together.
6. Keeping Up With the Kardashians
Sisters by nature, best friends by choice. The only women on reality TV who aren’t constantly at each other’s throats, these sisters are doing it for themselves (and their momager) in a way that is totally supportive and inspiring. Even though they have their petty disagreements, the end of each episode sees the girls put their pride behind them and make peace, knowing that family and friendship are more important.
5. Daria
Two super cool chicks who shared a disdain for pretty much everyone else in their school/lives, Daria and Jane made us wish we could join them over pizza and complain about how terrible people are. In spite of their sarcastic exteriors, these two were never afraid to stick up for one another through thick and thin.
4. The O.C.
Summer and Marissa, or ‘Coop’, were always there to help each other through their boy, family and school problems, and always looked fab while doing so. The way Summer would grieve Marissa’s death in the show’s final season was truly affecting.
3. Absolutely Fabulous
Two women just as outrageously fabulous as one another, the relationship between Edina and Patsy was ramshackle and dysfunctional, but made us all want to age ungracefully with our bestie just so we could continue to enable one another’s bad behaviour.
2. F.R.I.E.N.D.S
Could there be a female friendship list without Phoebe, Rachel and Monica? Of course not! These three taught us that no matter how much time went by, best friendships would always stay strong, silly, quirky, supportive, and unbelievably special. Even when one of their lives got turned upside down, the other two would be right there to hold their hand and help them through it.
1. Sex and the City
After years of searching for the perfect men, these smart, chic women realised they were one another’s soulmates after all. The fact that we all have a Carrie, a Samantha, a Miranda and a Charlotte in our friendship group is a testament to their perfectly balanced dynamic.
