The Handmaid’s Tale writer talks latest character death and upcoming finale
Warning: This article contains major spoilers for The Handmaid’s Tale episode ‘Postpartum’ (which has not aired in the UK yet)
The Handmaid’s Tale writer and producer Eric Tuchman has discussed the series’ latest episode ‘Postpartum’, describing it as “really impactful” and “horribly beautiful”.
‘Postpartum’ saw the public execution of Sydney Sweeney’s character Eden; a death that has divided fans of the show.
However, Tuchman has insisted Eden’s exit was necessary. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter ahead of the season two finale, he said: “First of all, it’s a character that seems to be really polarising for the audience… She seemed like such a pious and true believer, and as it turns out, it’s those very qualities that get Eden in trouble.
“She’s really one of the most honest people in this whole community. I find her death obviously really tragic, but it’s horribly beautiful in a way, too.”
Considering the ways in which Eden’s death will impact other characters, Tuchman continued: “Eden’s execution really galvanises Offred. It triggers some very strong reactions and actions from her and, as a result, our other characters.”
Hinting at what to expect from the upcoming finale, Eric teased it will be “a very surprising, powerful and emotional experience.
“Our audience will see things and confrontations they have been hoping for. And in the end, I think it will be very satisfying. I hope our fans agree.”
The Handmaid’s Tale airs on Hulu in the US and Channel 4 in the UK.
