The first poster for Game of Thrones season 7 is here
The first promotional poster for Game of Thrones‘ upcoming seventh series has been released.
The new poster doesn’t feature any of our fan favourite characters, but does tease the juxtaposition of ice and fire. Fans of the show will know that it is based on George R.R. Martin’s series of novels A Song of Ice and Fire.
One the poster, we can see ice and volcanoes, as well as the hashtag #GOTS7 and US channel HBO’s logo.
The poster could mean that something we’ve all been hoping to happen since the start of the series could be taking place in season seven.
The ‘fire’ in the series title is thought by fans to symbolise Queen Daenerys Targaryen, who controls three fire-breathing dragons and has twice been shown to be immune to burns in the series.
The meaning of ‘ice’ is more hotly debated, with some claiming it refers to King Jon Snow, who presides over the coldest region of the Seven Kingdoms, or else to the looming threat of White Walkers – a race of mysterious ice zombies who pose an imminent threat to Westeros.
‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ could also refer to Jon Snow’s parentage as a half Stark, half Targaryen, which was revealed in the closing moments of season six but is unbeknownst to Jon.
Whatever the elements symbolise, it looks like we’re going to see some major players finally come together in the upcoming season. Could this be the season that the White Walkers finally invade Westeros, where they’ll come face to face with Drogon, Viserys and Rhaegon? Or could it be the meeting of Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen which inspires the poster?
We can’t wait to find out.
Game of Thrones returns in Summer 2017.
