Divergent film series to end with a TV movie and spin-off series
Hit film series Divergent will finish with a TV movie and a spin-off television series, according to Variety.
The decision to cancel the fourth film Ascendant‘s theatrical release is thought to have been made as a result of the poor performance of third film Allegiant at the box office earlier this year. While the first two films Divergent and Insurgent were big hits, Allegiant failed to set the charts alight.
Ascendant was scheduled to be released in summer 2017, where it would have competed against World War Z 2 and a new reboot of The Mummy.
The Divergent films are based upon a series of books by Veronica Roth. The series is set in a post-apocalyptic world where people are divided into factions based on their personalities, and these factions govern their world as appropriate to their abilities. However, this balance is rocked when Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) learns she is ‘divergent’ -meaning she fits into no faction – and at the forefront of a hidden war against her kind.
Divergent stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Ansel Elgort have not yet confirmed if they will appear in the TV movie and subsequent series.
