Could Delia Smith, Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders be in line for Channel 4’s Bake Off?
Channel 4 are reportedly targeting Delia Smith, Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders as potential replacements for Mary Berry, Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins on the Great British Bake Off.
As we all know, Britain’s favourite baking competition will be moving to Channel 4 next year, which caused presenters Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins, and then judge Mary Berry, to announce their departure from the show. With extremely big boots to fill, Channel 4 are going to have to pull something pretty amazing out of the bag for the next series. Their rumoured wishlist does look rather promising, however.
Cookery legend Delia Smith is apparently a dream candidate to replace the much-loved judge Mary Berry. A source told The Sun: “The pressure is now on to sign up the best team possible. The bosses want a real baking legend to replace Mary and Delia is topping the list there, as her cookery books are an absolute kitchen staple.”
The gaping hole left by presenters Mel and Sue’s absence will supposedly be filled by Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders. The duo are known for their sketch show on the BBC, and Channel 4 are hoping that they will provide the excellent comedy value that is so vital an ingredient in the Bake Off‘s success.
The source explained: “Dawn and Jennifer would be a dynamite signing. They have wonderful chemistry, which is what viewers really loved about Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins.”
This is, of course, just hearsay information for the time being as Channel 4 insists that they have not yet approached any celebrities for the roles. A Channel 4 spokesperson commented: “We are taking our time to find the right presenters and judges for Bake Off.”
If the rumours are true, maybe these personalities could just about save the Great British Bake Off from the tragic departures of Mary, Mel and Sue. We will have to see.
The current series of The Great British Bake Off continues Wednesday at 8pm on BBC One.
