Could an X-Men and Fantastic Four crossover be in the pipeline? According to X-Men: Apocalypse director Bryan Singer, yes!
The 49-year-old reckons his mutants could span squads with Josh Trank’s rebooted Fantastic Four at some point in the future.
“Those ideas are in play,” said Singer. “That would be a natural match-up because they’re both ensemble films and there is a natural mechanism by which to do it.”
But how exactly the two teams would be able to join up is tricky, and Singer has some ideas about that too. “It deals with time. That’s all I’m going to say,” the The Usual Suspects director told Yahoo Movies.
But why hasn’t this happened before? Well, while Marvel comics are in a pretty hefty shape now, a few years ago they were in the midst of a financial meltdown and so sold the movie rights to some of the most prolific and popular characters including: Spider-Man, Daredevil, the X-Men and the Fantastic Four.
Of course, various movie studios snapped up the characters, so when Marvel started to make its own movies with parent company Disney later on, it had to resort to adapting the stories of less-known characters such as Thor and Iron Man, due to the fact its big names were still owned by other companies.
So, while Iron Man, Captain America and Guardians of the Galaxy are owned by Marvel Studios, Fantastic Four and X-Men is still owned by 20th century Fox, who in the wake of the popularity of The Avengers are determined to forge their own movie universe, which Singer’s comments indicate.
Fingers crossed, in a couple of years we could have another explosive crossover on our hands.
