25 hints from the new Game of Thrones season six trailer
It feels like after months of scrabbling for any information at all about the upcoming series of Game of Thrones, everything is suddenly arriving all at once.
Yesterday, the second trailer for the series six dropped, and it’s packed full of interesting titbits for us to delve right into. Firstly, here’s the trailer:
Got all that? It’s a lot of scenes, characters and action to pack into two minutes. Luckily, we’ve sat here breaking down every single scene and analysing every second so you don’t have to. Here are 25 things we noticed in the new Game of Thrones trailer:
1. Jon Snow is dead.
The trailer starts with a shot of Jon’s lifeless body. It looks like Game of Thrones isn’t going to budge even a little bit on this until at least the season premiere.
“I thought he was the man to lead us through the long night, but I was wrong,” says Davos gravely. He speaks for all of us.
2. Tyrion is leading Meereen (and may be about as trusted as Dany).
Tyrion inherited Dany’s troubles in Meereen after she was forced to evacuate on the back of Drogon last series. If this short clip of him being taunted in the throne room is anything to go by, he may experience just as much difficulty as she did.
“Do you like games, little man?”
3. Jaime takes on the High Sparrow.
As expected, the Lannisters are standing up to the High Sparrow after Cersei became imprisoned last series in a plot that culminated in the Lannister schemer humiliated in a walk of shame through King’s Landing.
Jaime does not appear to care much for propriety in a religious place.
“You would spill blood in this holy place?” asks the High Sparrow.
“The Gods won’t mind, they spill more blood than the rest of us combined,” replies Jaime.
4. Drogon has woken up and is soaring over the Dothraki.
Dany’s most-loved dragon Drogon appears to have recovered from the long journey from Meereen, and is flying over a group of Dothraki (which may or may not contain Dany).
5. Arya is being punished by the Faceless Men for going rogue and killing Meryn Trant last season.
After spending all that time last season becoming ready to be a Faceless Man, Arya is being punished for pursuing her personal vendettas. It seems as though she’s lost their trust, but she will be given a second chance.
“A girl has been given a second chance. There will not be a third.”
6. A bedraggled Daenerys is stripped.
It doesn’t look like all is well for Daenerys with the Dothraki tribes, as the trailer shows her being stripped in a scene oddly reminiscent of season one.
7. Sansa wants revenge.
Unsurprisingly, a certain Miss Stark wants revenge for all she has suffered through since her father left Winterfell for King’s Landing, especially what happened with Ramsay (who the trailer shows us the briefest glimpse of).
“It’s all I think about,” she says in voiceover, “what’s been taken from me.”
8. Littlefinger is all-knowing.
Littlefinger, who was revealed to be the character who set the events of the series in action by conspiring to poison Jon Arryn, says aloud what we all know: “I know what happens.”
9. Jorah’s greyscale is much worse.
After being struck by a Stone Man last season, Jorah became infected with the terminal greyscale – but chose to keep it a secret. In a snippet from the trailer, he glances at his almost completely stone arm. He seems to still be keeping it a secret.
10. Margaery and Loras are not in a good way.
If you’d forgotten, both Tyrell tricksters managed to get themselves imprisoned in the dungeons (with the help of Cersei) last season. In the trailer they embrace, bedraggled, and one can’t help but think Margaery has a plan.
11. Davos thinks there’s no hiding from a certain threat.
“There’s no hiding from this,” says Davos, “we have to fight.”
We’re pretty sure he’s talking about the oncoming surge of ice zombies.
12. Melisandre’s got a smile on her face.
Red Priestess Melisandre looks pleased, but why, after all her beliefs about Stannis last season were proven so tragically wrong? Could she be scheming to bring a certain bastard back to life?
13. Cersei is encouraging Jaime (we think) to lead the Lannister army.
The vitriol in her voice suggests she’s back to her usual self. She must have complete faith in Jaime to risk losing him so soon after the death of Myrcella (if Jaime is who she is talking to).
This is interspersed with clips of Cersei lovingly lifting Tommen’s chin, and Jaime fighting, and even a brief glimpse at the zombie Mountain Ser Robert Strong.
“Stand at the head of our army where you belong, show them what Lannisters are.”
14. Finally, the characters are acknowledging what we as the audience have known all along…
“The real war is between the living and the dead, and make no mistake, the dead are coming,” says Davos.
We’ve finally reached an acknowledgement that what’s happening in the North is a far greater worry than all the brawling over who should be King in the South.
15. Fighting the dead will involve fire.
Makes sense. We suggest watching The Walking Dead.
16. Sam is unhappy.
Is Sam being comforted about the loss of his old comrade Jon Snow? If the news has reached him in Oldtown, it looks like Jon is staying dead for a while.
17. The Three-Eyed Raven has left his sanctuary.
There’s no sign of Bran in this trailer, though previous trailers have suggested his role will be pivotal after taking a break last series to master his abilities with the Three-Eyed Raven. Could the Three-Eyed Raven be watching Bran in this scene?
18. Arya’s learnt some pretty cool fighting abilities.
It looks like she is being trained, and she is just as ferocious as ever.
19. Ramsay is leading the Bolton troops yet again.
It looks like they are fighting the Wildlings.
20. We haven’t seen the last of the Sons of the Harpy.
The terrorist group are clearly back, despite successfully driving away Daenerys Targaryen. It looks like defeating them will be Tyrion’s responsibility this season.
21. Theon’s alive.
He’s crying and looks worse for wear, but is noticeably alive.
22. Yes, they’re really fighting the members of the Sparrows.
As Jaime promised earlier in the trailer, we see a scene suggesting that a Sparrow has been hurt in Jaime’s onslaught. We never thought we’d say it, but hooray for the Lannisters!
23. Someone has grabbed Pod from behind.
It’s probably Brienne trying to escort him away subtly, but we can’t help but worry for the fate of the lovable squire anyway.
24. Someone’s hand is bloodied.
Makes sense – it’s Game of Thrones. Any guesses at whose hand this is?
25. Tyrion meets Dany’s dragons.
After a speech on dragon rights earlier in the trailer, we see Tyrion visiting Viserion and Rhaegal where Dany imprisoned them.
Somehow we doubt he is going to be burnt to death, and if certain fan theories about Tyrion’s true parentage are to be believed, he may have an easier time with Dany’s dearest than we expect.
